From the locals: How to stay healthy on your vacation

It’s easily done. We all pig out on vacation and that’s ok. But, holiday blues will kick in when you get back to reality, and what will make it worse is a bloated belly and a feeling of exhaustion that just won’t budge. Take it from me, a person who has travelled almost every month this year - and has been on the point of burn out many times. Your health should still be your number one priority, even when you’re on your dream vacation without a care in the world. Here’s a few tips on how to stay feelings fresh & energetic during and after your holiday getaway.

  1. Drink water. Lots of it

It may sound obvious, but it’s one of those things that just slips your mind. You’re too immersed in your book, getting bronzed up & sipping frozen drinks to remember to keep hydrated, but it should always be in the back of your mind. Heat exhaustion & sun stroke are real and can spoil your trip. Filling up on water at regular intervals leaves you felling refreshed and nourished and you’ll have more energy….for all that sunbathing you have to do.

2. Eat fruits with your breakfast and/or grab a juice

It’s easy to skip breakfast if you have a busy itinerary & you’re out exploring, but if you’re in a rush grab a fresh juice or banana / fruit for the road if you can. Your body will thank you.

3. Go for walks or get some exercise

Make sunset beach walks part of your daily routine while you’re vacationing. Not only will you start your day feeling relaxed and awed by the natural beauty of the gentle waves lapping against the shore, but you’ll shed a few calories and feel energized too.

4. Remember your supplements & vitamins

You should be taking your vitamins everyday as it is, and with risk of sounding like your mother….shame on you if you’re not! Just kidding, but bring your vitamins and supplements with you. Just because you’re away from home, doesn’t mean you should give up your health regiments. You’ll feel way better for it, trust me.

5. Slather on that sunscreen

There’s no argument. Heat stroke, sun stroke sucks. Make sure you pack a water-resistant sunscreen and you slather it on. If you’re travelling solo, find an attractive local to help you with your back. You may get lucky. Avoiding sunburn I mean…

6. Portion control

We all want to splurge when we’re on vacation, trying the local delicacies packed with carb after carb. By all means indulge, but try and control your portions if you can. Eat more often and more regularly to avoid packing on the pounds and feeling sluggish when you get back home.
