Island Life Diaries: Jim Gates

WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM?

The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO MOVE TO CAYMAN?

In 2004 my brother was working for DiveTech as a scuba instructor. I had spent a year as a journalist at a small town paper in Alberta before heading to Whistler to work as a photographer for the ski season. At the end of the season I was wondering what my next move would be, whether to look for another journalism job or not, when my brother called me up and asked if I wanted to work as an underwater videographer making videos for tourists on snorkelling!

WHAT DO YOU, NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE?

I have a photography company called Blue Dot Studios so most of my time is spent either taking photos or running the company.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TOP 3 PLACES TO TAKE PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS?

My favourites are Starfish Point, Surfers Beach in South Sound, and at the Ritz-Carlton.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR TOP 3 PLACES TO GO SNORKELING OR DIVING?

For snorkelling, my favourite is Eden Rock. My favourite Dives are Babylon and now Eagle Ray Pass after last weekend seeing a Hammerhead, a Caribbean reef shark and having a nurse shark follow us around for the entire dive!

MOST ROMANTIC PLACE TO TAKE SOMEONE TO DINNER?

For me it was when I borrowed my friends boat and surprised my then girlfriend with a picnic dinner at sunset on Starfish point. I had Hi Tide playing for us on the beach. She said yes ;) But if you’re looking for something a little easier logistically there are so many good restaurants to choose from - some of my favourites are Agua, Catch, Bácaro, and The Brasserie to name a few.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SPEND TIME ON THE WEEKENDS?

Right now it’s working on my sailboat that I’m restoring. Hopefully soon it will be sailing!

WHAT ABOUT A LOCAL DISH EVERYONE MUST TRY WHEN VISITING?

Get jerk chicken at the stand on the side of the road near the Prospect Playhouse - delicious, authentic and affordable.

GIVE US SOME ADVICE YOU WISH YOU HAD WHEN YOU FIRST MOVED HERE?

Just because you’re moving to the tropics don’t board your flight from Vancouver in board shorts, flip-flops and a singlet…What was I thinking? I nearly froze to death on the way here. Also, get involved in the community - sports, volunteering, etc. There is so much going and it’s a great way to meet interesting people from all over the world.
